The Okavango Delta is unique. It is the largest inland delta in the world, instead of flowing into the sea, the annual flood
from Angola and the local rainfall flows inland, spreading over 15 000 kilometres of Kalahari sand in a maze of lagoons
and channels. The countless islands that emerge from its waterways give rise to several diverse ecosystems which are
home to vast numbers of game, fish and a myriad birds. The Delta is impressive all year-round when the clear water is at
its deepest. Most of the young are born between November and March when the vegetation is lush.

It's also a wonderful place to relax. Gliding silently in a mokoro (a dugout canoe), you can watch the wildlife and enjoy the
tranquillity. Often it's the smaller things that amaze you, like the tropical fish that dive in and out of the clear waters or the
iridescent Malachite Kingfishers that dive for them. It takes keen eyes to spot the terrapins basking on floating logs, or a
Fish Eagle just perching, waiting to catch its dinner. Larger animals are also seen - Red Lechwe wading through the
shallows, or Elephants on the islands. Within the Okavango Delta about 460 of Botswana’s 600 bird species are found.
Some of the rarer sightings, or as birders would term it, "Lifers" (a once-in-a-lifetime sighting) within the Xaxaba area
have included Pel's Fishing Owl, Black Coucal, Pink-throated Longclaw, African Skimmer and Wattled Crane.

The African Fish Eagle is very similar in appearance to the American Bold Eagle. These birds do not only feed on fish, as
many people believe. Up along the Savuti Channel they have been known to catch Cape Turtledoves. However in the
Okavango, their main diet is fish.

Game abounds year-round in the Okavango Delta and the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, in its centre, a 3 000 square kilometre
wildlife sanctuary. Hippos and Crocodiles bathe and laze in clear waters, while huge herds of Impala and Tsessebe roam
the savannah. In the dry season, large herds of Buffalo, Wildebeest and Zebra migrate back into the area from the
Kalahari. The rare Sitatunga and Lechwe Antelope live in the papyrus banks of the waterways and Lion, Cheetah and
leopard hunt in the open veld. For an all-round holiday including land- and water-based game experiences, there is
nowhere in Africa that can offer more than the Okavango Delta.
